Dental Mouthguards for Sport

Dental Mouthguards for Sport

Sports mouthguards protect the teeth from damage during physical activity and sports. They can be made from different materials which offer different levels of protection. The best type of mouthguard for you will depend on your preferences and unique needs.

Smileologie makes custom-fitted mouthguards designed to offer the best protection and comfort.

Custom dental mouthguards are an excellent and cost-effective preventative option for those looking to protect their teeth.

Talk to us about which type of mouthguard will be right for you. Whichever type of mouthguard you choose, consult your dentist to ensure that it fits properly and provides the level of protection you need.

Why Choose a Custom-Fitted Mouthguard?

A custom mouthguard is made to fit your mouth precisely, which means that it can offer better protection than generic, over-the-counter stock or boil-and-bite mouthguards.

Boil-and-bite mouthguards are made of a thermoplastic material that can be softened by boiling, and then moulded to the shape of your teeth for a better fit than stock mouthguards. However, they are still more rigid and inflexible than a custom-fitted mouthguard.

Made by your dentist in our on-site lab, custom-fitted mouthguards are the best fit and can be tailored to your specific dental needs. More flexible than boil-and-bite guards, the shock-absorbent material will cushion your teeth in the event of a fall or collision.

A custom-fit mouthguard is also more comfortable to wear, which is important since you’re more likely to actually wear your mouthguard if it is comfortable.

Made by a dental professional, custom mouthguards are an excellent option for those looking to protect their teeth from dental trauma.

Custom Sports Mouthguards

Sports Mouthguards are designed to reduce the risk and severity of dental injury by absorbing impact on the mouth or face during periods of high risk. Without one, you risk damaging, chipping, breaking or even knocking out teeth, which can be a painful and costly problem to fix.

A sports mouthguard is essential for high-impact sports like football and boxing, team sports like netball and basketball, but also non-contact sports like skateboarding, gymnastics or horse riding. Actually, sports mouth guards can help to avoid costly dental procedures from broken teeth or injury from any sporting activity.

A well-fitted, custom-made sports mouth guard can increase the protection for your teeth and jaw by limiting the impact of contact and reducing the severity of any potential mouth injury.

Custom mouthguard material is also softer and more flexible than that of boil-and-bite mouthguards or ‘off the shelf’ mouthguards, making them more comfortable to wear and providing better protection for your teeth.

What to Expect During Your Custom Mouthguard Appointment

Getting a custom mouthguard that will perfectly fit your teeth and mouth at Smileologie is straightforward:

Scan: We begin by digitally scanning your upper teeth and mouth with an intra-oral 3D scanner (no impression moulds).

Design: We then create a treatment plan and digital blueprint of your bite. This helps to ensure that the mouthguard will fit snugly against your teeth and gum line.

Print: We then 3D print the mould for your mouthguard. Doing this results in an amazingly accurate and custom fit and a fast turn-around.

Vacuum Form: We then use this mould as a template to vacuum-form the sports mouthguard from flexible, shock-absorbing materials.

Trim & Polish:  Your new custom mouthguard is given a thorough trim and polish resulting in a smooth, comfortable fit.

The result is an individually made sports mouthguard specifically for your needs, giving you the peace of mind that it will protect your precious teeth while partaking in your favourite sport or recreational activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people don’t give much thought to their mouthguards, but it’s essential to keep them clean. After all, you’re putting them in your mouth, so you want to make sure they’re free of germs. The good news is that it’s easy to keep your mouthguard clean with just a few simple steps. First, rinse it off with cold water after each use. Then, give it a good scrub with a toothbrush and soapy water. Finally, rinse it and store it in a clean, dry place. Do not expose your custom mouthguard to excessive heat (leave it in a hot car or bag in the sun) or wash it with hot water. Any heat will change the form and decrease its fit.

A mouthguard and an occlusal splint are similar in that they both protect the teeth and jaw, but they have different uses and functions.

  • A mouthguard is a device worn over the teeth and gums during sports or other physical activities to protect them from injury.
  • An occlusal splint, also known as a night guard or bite guard, is a device worn on the upper or lower teeth to protect them from damage caused by grinding or clenching. It is used to treat conditions such as bruxism (teeth grinding), TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder), and malocclusion (bad bite).  Read more about Occlusal Splints here.

You’ve probably seen athletes wearing mouthguards and wondered if they restrict breathing while exerting themselves. Custom-fitted mouthguards are less likely to restrict breathing because they are designed to be less bulky.

Most people focus on protecting their upper teeth when they think about mouthguards. This is because the mouthguard for your upper teeth also protects your bottom teeth from collision injuries to a certain extent. Having both upper and lower guards can add unnecessary bulk and can restrict breathing. Your dentist can help you determine if you need a mouthguard for your lower teeth and advise you on the best type of mouthguard to use.
